“Mr. & Mrs. Smith” has several distinctions in the Carole Lombard cinematic oeuvre in addition to being directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It’s also the only genuine marital farce Lombard ever made (although like many stars of the era, she tried her hand in a radio adaptation of “The Awful Truth,” the best-known example of the genre).
To that end, Carole and co-star Robert Montgomery posed for photos illustrating marital discord and harmony, and they were assembled into a pair of heart-shaped images:
The photo at top, of the Smiths quarreling, is fairly common among images from this film. However, the one at the bottom, showing Carole and Bob cheek-to-cheek, is comparatively rare.
