Well, sort of. Carole Lombard and Clark Gable pose for a candid photo in front of Santa Rosa (Calif.) High School, probably in 1940. There’s a fishing rod in Carole’s hand, as the couple was in Sonoma County for some outdoor relaxation. (This may have been shortly before or after Lombard did some location filming for “They Knew What They Wanted,” part of which was set in California wine country.)

The snapshot was taken by the seller’s mother, who obviously was delighted to see two of America’s most popular film stars in the flesh. The Gables themselves appear pretty enthused; they were known as down-to-earth people despite their lofty celebrity status, and posing for such things was part of the job. Here are Clark and Carole in closeup:

The photo is in reasonable condition for a 73-year-old candid, with “minor wear with small creases in surface emulsion.” It measures 3 1/4″ x 4 3/8″, typical for a snapshot of the time.

Bidding on this rarity begins at $35 and is scheduled to end at 8:30 p.m.. (Eastern) next Sunday.
