Nice, leggy pic of Carole Lombard taken by Otto Dyar…and you think you’ve seen it before, right? Well, maybe you have — but I’m pretty certain I haven’t, and since I’ve been cataloging Lombard portraits for some years now, I like to think I know of what I speak.

The above is Paramount p1202-559, which heretofore hadn’t been in my online collection. But others obviously from the same session, with Carole in feathers, were there already, such as p1202-554…

…or p1202-561:

Several of these portraits– somewhat rare variations from Lombard sessions — are being auctioned at eBay. They aren’t “vintage” in the strict sense, but they were struck from the original negatives in the mid-1960s. As the seller, “baseballguy1,” writes:

“These images may have had a maximum of three prints made from a negative total. The Culver Service archive, from which a large many of these images ultimately derive, was the major image brokerage house in New York City used by national magazines during the 1910s-1940s. They provided many of the illustrations published in Theatre Magazine, Motion Picture Classic, Century, and the New York newspapers. Many of those photographs are the ONLY surviving images of certain productions or sittings.”

Here are a few other of these pics, alongside a more common shot from the same session. First, p1202-826…

…not as well-known as p1202-825:

This one, p1202-1341, shows Carole from the front…

…but note both the background and the part of her dress around the back of her neck, and it’s from the session that produced p1202-1335:

Eugene Robert Richee photographed p1202-1389…

…and did p1202-1380, too:

And p1202-1416 (top) has much the same feel as p1202-1418 (bottom):

We even have a “mystery” pic, because neither of us can figure out which p1202 number it is. While “baseballguy1” lists this as “p1202-84x”…

…look at the lower right-hand corner:

That second digit isn’t a “4,” but a “9.” And not only is Lombard’s appearance not from the era when p1202-89 would have been taken, we already have that picture:

The mystery pic’s number therefore is “89x.” We have several images in which Carole wears that outfit — p1202-894…

…p1202-895…

…and p1202-897:

Might that missing image be p1202-896? Hard to say after this bit of Philo Vance sleuthing, but at least some progress has been made. We do know bids on all six of these pics begin at $6.99, and all of these auctions end between 9:06 and 9:16 p.m. (Eastern) next Tuesday.
