This publicity portrait of Carole Lombard from her first Paramount movie, 1930’s “Safety In Numbers,” an 8″ x 10″ reprint, is on sale for $10, down from its original price of $13.50. If you’re interested, visit http://www.ebay.com/itm/Carole-Lombard-B-W-8×10-Photo-02-/271255313015?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f28139a77 to learn more. It’s among several Lombard goodies being sold, not auctioned, at eBay today.

One of them is “Screwball,” Larry Swindell’s fine 1975 biography of Carole…

…but what makes this special is that it’s autographed by the writer himself (Swindell has been a book reviewer in recent years):

And just in case you haven’t perused “Screwball” in several years, here are the front and back inside jackets…

…and a two-page photo spread (which, as fate would have it, covers all four of Carole’s RKO films):

This bio isn’t easy to find these days, and the asking price of $175 isn’t all that much more than for unsigned copies. (It’s in good condition.) To purchase it, go tohttp://www.ebay.com/itm/Screwball-The-Life-of-Carole-Lombard-by-Larry-Swindell-1975-Book-SIGNED-/231030617960?pt=US_Nonfiction_Book&hash=item35ca7f7768.

Now how about one of the trade papers of that era, specifically the Feb. 28, 1939 issue of the Hollywood Reporter

(Hmmmm…did you know MGM sought to cast Cary Grant opposite Greta Garbo in “Ninotchka”? I didn’t, either.) But while you ponder the possibility of Grant working with Ernst Lubitsch, take a look at the Lombard angle to this issue — a two-page spread from Selznick International Pictures promoting Carole and James Stewart’s boffo box office in “Made For Each Other”:

This eight-page issue’s regular price is $20, but today only you can get it at an 18 percent discount, for $16.40. If you like collecting vintage Hollywood publications, this would be right up your alley.
