“Bolero” ranks among Carole Lombard’s most sensual films, and not only because there’s an extended scene of her dancing in lingerie and stockings. Carole had a genuine chemistry with co-star George Raft, both on screen and in bed (Lombard told close friends that in a purely sexual sense, Raft was the best lover she ever had), and this rapport shows throughout the movie — in both their acting and their dancing.

“Bolero” was one of Paramount’s biggest hits of 1934, and its popularity resonated on both sides of the Atlantic. The Sept. 1, 1934 issue of the British fan magazine Picture Show featured a two-page spread on the film…

…while the cover subjects were Marion Davies and Gary Cooper in “Spy 13” (the British title for what Americans knew as “Operator 13”):

Speaking of Davies, the August 1933 issue of Motion Picture ran an article on her status as the real social queen of Hollywood. It’s a fun read, and well captures Davies’ charming, charitable personality…but note the person who isn’t mentioned:
