For sheer screwball fun, few films rival “My Man Godfrey.” And it probably won’t come as much of a surprise to learn that for Carole Lombard and the rest of the “Godfrey” crew, it was as much fun for them to make as it is for us to watch.

That’s evident from reading an article in the September 1936 issue of Movie Classic, where writer William F. French discusses the zany life on the set:

Many of us wish we could go back in time and visit the set of a classic film as it was being created, and I have little doubt that “Godfrey” would be at the top of quite a few people’s lists. (And from some of Carole and Bill’s comments, they were sort of Method actors long before Marlon Brando came on the scene.)

If that piece isn’t enough Lombard for you, how about this rarely seen Lux ad?

And that back-in-time trip to 1930s Hollywood? Get there by taking a Greyhound bus (though there’s no guarantee you’ll meet a runaway heiress or a dashing newspaper reporter):

All in all, some things to think about the next time you sit down to watch “Godfrey.”
