If “Fools For Scandal” had exhibited anywhere near the charm that leads Carole Lombard and Fernand Gravet show in this publicity still, it wouldn’t rank as one of Carole’s most disappointing movies. But while the front is printed in English, the back displays where it was circulated:

It’s from Warners publicity department in Buenos Aires, and as best as my rudimentary knowledge of Spanish detects, the movie (“Caballero de Escandalo”) was not dubbed, but was presented in English with subtitles. Moreover, it was to premiere May 24 (1938) at El Cine Ambassador.

Opened in 1933 and seating 1,400 according to http://cinematreasures.org, the Ambassador has long been closed, and this double exposure pic eerily reveals its “ghosts.” The theater is not to be confused with a similarly-named venue in the coastal resort town of Mar del Plata and home to South America’s best-known film festival.

The photo measures 7 3/4″ x 10″, is in very good condition and can be bought for $45. To purchase or learn more, visit http://www.ebay.com/itm/CAROLE-LOMBARD-FERNAND-GRAVET-in-Fools-For-Scandal-Original-Vint-Photo-1938-/160951723084?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item257978644c.
