A memorabilia auction that includes several Carole Lombard items of note is being sponsored this weekend by Profiles in History. It’s its “Hollywood Auction 53,” which got under way at 2 p.m. (Eastern), and continues into Sunday.

As was the case with the photo above, two of the images are from Lombard’s time at RKO, both taken by the studio’s top portrait photographer, Ernest A. Bachrach. First, Carole sitting and smiling:

Next, Lombard lights up, something that might have looked sultry then but seems dated now:

Both are silver bromide matte double-weight photos measuring 11″ x 14″, and both are from Bachrach’s personal collection. Each is valued between $200 and $300.

But here’s the real wowser:

It’s a treasure trove of original Lombard negatives. While 20 are shown on the page, there are actually 78, all most likely from Paramount. I wish I could provide more information, such as p1202 numbers and samples of some of the rarities available; unfortunately, Profiles in History declined to answer that request (which I understand from their perspective, but I have never copied any image shown at “Carole & Co.” for personal gain — they are presented strictly as historical documents). So the best I can do for you is enlarge sections of this page to give you an idea of what’s on hand here.

Those 20 images by themselves are impressive — and that’s slightly more than one-quarter of the collection. Alas, with a pre-auction value of $6,000 to $8,000, it’s probably beyond the means of any of us here (unless you won MegaMillions last night, or Power Ball tonight), so we may never know what Lombard goodies are stashed away in this collection.
